Bortoleto and Colapinto Both Penalised for Race-Day Incidents

Two more penalties came out of Saturday's race, both stemming from confusion and contact around the Safety Car restarts. Gabriel Bortoleto was handed a 10-second time penalty for overtaking under yellow flags, while Franco Colapinto picked up a penalty for a first-lap collision with Pierre Gasly that ended both of their races.

Bortoleto's case turned on a mix-up between two different signals. On the first lap after the restart, marshal posts were showing waved yellow flags alongside 'SC' boards, but Race Control had not actually redeployed the Safety Car at that point. Bortoleto said he saw the yellow flags but received no corresponding electronic signal in his steering wheel, and that his team had told him the Safety Car hadn't been deployed, leaving him unsure of the race's actual status. The stewards accepted that the mixed signals contributed to his confusion, but ruled that a waved yellow flag has to be respected in its own right regardless of what else is being shown alongside it, and applied the standard penalty for overtaking under yellow.

Colapinto's penalty came from a heavier moment. Approaching Gasly from behind into Turn 1 at the restart, he braked too late, went for the inside in a way the stewards judged uncontrolled, ran wide and made contact with the left side of Gasly's car, sending both of them into retirement. With no other driver found to share any blame for the incident, the stewards applied the standard 10-second penalty for causing a collision. The Penalty was converted into a 5-place grid drop for his next race.
