Ferrari head to the Hungarian Grand Prix with genuine reason for optimism. The Hungaroring is a very different challenge from Spa-Francorchamps, and its tight, twisty layout could play more naturally to the strengths of the Ferrari SF-26.

So far this season, Mercedes have established themselves as the benchmark at the front, with Ferrari emerging as the second-strongest team in the competitive order. The Scuderia has consistently been the closest challenger to Mercedes, although the gap between the two teams has varied from circuit to circuit. That makes Hungary an intriguing opportunity for Ferrari to close the gap further.

The circuit places a greater emphasis on cornering performance, downforce and mechanical grip than outright power. With 14 corners and relatively few long straights, drivers spend much of the lap managing the car through a sequence of slow- and medium-speed turns. That could benefit Ferrari, whose 2026 car has shown strong performance through corners but has been less convincing on circuits where straight-line efficiency and power are more heavily rewarded.

The timing is also interesting. Ferrari were able to challenge strongly at Spa despite the Belgian circuit traditionally placing greater emphasis on power and efficiency. Charles Leclerc finished second there, giving the team further encouragement heading into a track that could suit its chassis even better.

There are, however, reasons for Ferrari to remain cautious. Mercedes have been the benchmark for much of the season, and the Hungaroring's demanding corners will place significant importance on tyre management and finding the right setup. The track's limited overtaking opportunities also make qualifying especially important, meaning Ferrari will need to maximise its performance over a single lap.

Still, the characteristics of the Hungaroring offer Ferrari perhaps its most promising opportunity yet to put pressure on Mercedes. If the SF-26 can combine its strong cornering performance with competitive tyre management, Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton could find themselves fighting at the front once again.
