Stroll Hit With 40-Place Grid Drop as Stewards Also Sanction Norris and Sainz

Pole position was not the only headline out of qualifying day at the Madring, the stewards were busy too, handing out three separate decisions that will shuffle the grid before lights out on Sunday. The heaviest of them lands on Lance Stroll, who picks up a 40-place grid penalty after Aston Martin fitted a fresh batch of power unit components in FP3. A new engine, turbocharger and ancillary component each carry a 10-place hit, while a new energy store and MGU-K add five places apiece, stacking up to the maximum sanction under the FIA's grid penalty structure. In practical terms, Stroll will start Sunday's race from the back of the field regardless of where he actually qualified.

Carlos Sainz's Saturday, already a difficult one after failing to escape Q1, got worse after the session. The stewards found that Williams had failed to warn him a flying Valtteri Bottas was closing in behind, and that Sainz then unnecessarily held the Cadillac up through Turns 6 and 7. The verdict was a straightforward one once the team radio and in-car footage were reviewed: a three-place grid penalty for impeding, adding insult to what was already a tough afternoon for the home favourite.

Even Saturday's biggest story didn't escape the stewards' attention. Race-winner-in-waiting Lando Norris was fined €900 after his McLaren was clocked at 88.5 km/h in the pit lane against an 80 km/h limit, a relatively minor breach, and one that costs the team financially rather than the driver on track.

None of these penalties change who starts where at the front, but they will reshape the midfield and rear of the grid.
