Norris Takes 10-Place Grid Penalty for Belgian Grand Prix

Norris Takes 10-Place Grid Penalty for Belgian Grand Prix

Lando Norris will face a tougher challenge at this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix after McLaren confirmed a 10-place grid penalty following changes to his car's power unit. The team introduced a new power electronics unit beyond the number permitted under Formula 1's season-long allocation, resulting in an automatic grid drop under FIA regulations.

The decision follows a series of reliability concerns that have affected McLaren during the 2026 campaign. Rather than risk further mechanical issues later in the season, the team opted to introduce the new component at Spa-Francorchamps, a circuit where overtaking opportunities are more plentiful than at many other venues on the calendar. The strategy is designed to minimise the long-term impact of the penalty while improving reliability for the remaining races.

Although the penalty significantly affects Norris' starting position, it does not rule him out of contention for a strong result. Spa's combination of long straights and heavy braking zones has often produced action-packed races, giving drivers the chance to recover positions through race pace and strategy. McLaren will be hoping those characteristics work in Norris' favour as he looks to climb through the field.

The setback is also part of the team's broader championship strategy. Taking the penalty at a circuit where passing is more achievable could prove less costly than delaying the component change until later in the season, when races at tighter circuits would make recovery far more difficult. With plenty of championship points still available, McLaren will be focused on ensuring Norris has the reliability needed to remain competitive in the races ahead.
