Saturday morning belonged to Mercedes, with Kimi Antonelli topping FP3 by nearly three tenths after the team spent the overnight hours in the simulator working through their new upgrade package. Hadjar split the Mercedes pair in second, Russell was fourth, and further back Leclerc and Hamilton both struggled to put together clean laps in traffic, leaving Ferrari looking off the pace they'd shown in Baku. Aston Martin's progress was quietly encouraging too, Alonso 11th and Stroll 14th, both notably closer to the pack than they'd managed the previous weekend.

Qualifying flipped the script entirely. Antonelli's strong morning didn't carry through, and it was Max Verstappen who delivered, setting a 1m 35.130s in Q3 to take his first pole position of the season, nearly three tenths clear of Hamilton, who qualified second. It's worth noting Hamilton's last runner-up qualifying effort came in Barcelona, and he turned that into a win there, so Sunday's grid order leaves an intriguing storyline even before lights out. Hadjar completed a strong top three for Red Bull, with Antonelli fourth and Leclerc fifth rounding out the second and third rows.

It was also a landmark session for the midfield. Both Aston Martins reached Q2 together for the first time this season, continuing the team's steady improvement since their difficult Baku weekend. Alonso had previously made it through alone back in Hungary, but Saturday marked the first time both cars have managed it together. Neither driver found enough pace to threaten Q3, eventually eliminated in 12th and 14th, but the session represented real progress for a team that looked to be struggling badly only a week ago.

There's a wider significance to Verstappen's lap beyond his own season as well. it's the first pole of the year not set by a Mercedes-powered car, breaking a run that had stood since the season began. Whether that translates into Red Bull's first win of the year on Sunday remains to be seen, especially with Hamilton lining up right behind him and a Mercedes pair who, on morning pace alone, still look like the car to beat around this track.
